Cost of living

I saw this play in previews so it might not have been the final version.

Cost of living is an incredible 4 person play telling the story of 2 pairs of people one separated couple the wife having been in an accident and lost her legs and is mostly paralyzed and her husband who wants to take care of her to give himself some meaning while she doesn’t want his help and the 2nd pair is a man with cerebral palsy and a woman who he hires to care for him.

While I’m going to try not to spoil the whole story I will be talking about some of the plot points, the show is incredibly moving as it explores the new relationship the one pair starts to build up even if they each think it’s going different ways and while exploring the other pair trying the help and allow the other to help even after their relationship is broken, also its exploration of the dynamic between an able bodied person and a disabled person was fascinating for me as I was thinking about dealing with my autistic brother and my work around disabled people.

The way the story is woven starting with just one of the characters talking to a unknown person in a bar one night and that as it switches between the two pairs until its final scene where the two able bodied people meet and ties the whole story together was fascinating.

Seeing each character going through their own struggles in their own way was a great remainder that no matter how one presents themselves to others you will never know what’s going on inside one’s life.

One amazing part of the play was being able to see disabled actors shine on stage with the disabled characters being played by actors with the same disabilities.

All in all this is a show that will remain in my head for a long time!
